(Extracts from Poojyashree Shree Amma's discourse on Navraathri during sathsang in Chennai)

You might have celebrated the Navraathri festival this year. You must be knowing the reason behind the celebration of this festival. Similarly, there are so many meanings in the festivals of great Hinduism. Poojyashree Shree Amma gave you an overview of the importance of celebrating the "Navraathri" festival at home. From this discourse, you have to learn how to celebrate each and every festival with sincerity, love and dedication.

There are so many countries in this huge world viz., Russia, Africa, America, South America etc. Among all, only India is greater than other countries & known as the holy land (punya bhoomi). All other countries are known as lands of temporary enjoyments (bhoga bhoomi).

In those lands there is only temporary enjoyment. Because of this temporary enjoyment there, people are fed up with their life. But there is some other need beyond these temporary enjoyments in this life which each one of us is unknowingly craving. After eating so much of varieties of foods and doing different types of work, there is no happiness and peace of mind at all.

Even a wealthy person has to leave the money at the time of his demise. On death, one has to leave behind everything here i.e., your friends, relations, family, wealth, etc. So there is no permanent happiness with all the above accessories. Apart from all these things, there is something great which was discovered and unfolded to us by our elderly devotees in India. This is the only permanent truth advised for us by the experienced devotees. Lots of people have enjoyed this truth as it is. In this holy land, the spirituality is mingled with our daily routine life. The pious saints of this great holy land have made it happen. That is the greatness of this sacred land.

Festivals too carry a special meaning mingled with our routine life. "Navraathri" is one amongst these festivals. Navraathri means nine nights. It is celebrated during the rainy chill weather. During "Navraathri" festival, people are given "Sundal" (cooked lentils as prasad) to consume the protein contents. The scientists have been telling about this protein content only now. But the great Hindu saints made this as a festival to celebrate and lead a healthy life. Gloomy and dull nights will affect the health of the people when there is lack of sun's rays. That's why people celebrate this festival with "Sundal", protein rich food.

To keep the health in a perfect condition they have to be busy in good activities. So that the people won't be affected by diseases. Different types of dolls are displayed and decorated. The front yard of the houses are decorated with different types of Kolams (rangolis). During these great auspicious days, the female child in every home is decorated with silk clothes and flowers to invite everybody in their neighbourhood. The female child will go to each and every home to invite the people to receive "Manjal" (Turmeric) and "Kumkum". This is something great about Hinduism. The ancient saints discovered that turmeric is the best antiseptic. Without any acid test and other scientific research methods, during the good old days, they discovered that this turmeric is the best antiseptic. That is the greatness of Hinduism. According to Hinduism, turmeric is good for ladies. In our great Hinduism, the turmeric and kumkum are the basic requirement for a married woman. By using turmeric paste, the body odour is removed.

Each and every festival of Hinduism is having a great meaning in it. Among these festivals "Navraathri" is meant for happiness for each member in the family and society. The major concept of this "Navraathri" festival is unity between each and every individual and also unity within the society. It's a festival of co-operation in the family. Everybody goes to each others house to accept "manjal, kumkum and Sundal" prepared in their own special way. Yes! The elderly men and women in the home guide the younger generations in preparing for the festival. So there won't be any quarrel of the so-called generation gap. The gents in the family help in arranging and decorating the idols and also in buying the requisite things for the festival. By this everyone is engaged in doing some work for the festival. So there is unity in home. Young girl's plaits are decorated everyday in a different hairstyle with variety of flowers. In the good old days, people were really dressed up in a beautiful manner with ornaments and flowers. They really mingled with other people and with the society. There is lot more to tell about the greatness of "Navraathri". Nowadays, the people are glued to their television sets. So they are not enjoying the real happiness.

The last day of this "Navraathri" festival is celebrated as "Vijayadasami (the victorious tenth day). That is the day for defeat of evil things. There is lot more information to tell and share about the festival. So all of you celebrate each festival by chanting God's name with devotion and dedication. Radhekrishna! Radhekrishna! Radhekrishna!

Listen to Amma's divine message!

India is the holy land with so many bhaktas (devotees). When we go through the Indian history, there must be a bhakta in every period. That is the greatness of this sacred land. Bhaktas are the role model for all the bonded souls. They enjoy their life in a perfect way. Bhaktas surrender themselves to the Lotus feet of Lord. By hearing or reading bhaktas' divine story, the bonded soul is enlightened to come out of the worldwide bondages.

Radhekrishna! Bhaktas! The Indian soil is filled with devotion & love. Those who are having immense faith on India will only be able to feel the sanctity here. Radhekrishna!

Last month, we enjoyed the real power of India told by a Frenchman. Radhekrishna!

Among 106 Dhivyadhesams, in a Dhivyadhesam bhagawan Narayana hugged goddess Sridevi. The name of the Dhivyadhesam itself illustrates this incident. The name of that Dhivyadhesam is "Thiruvaali Thirunagari".

This Thiruvaali Thirunagari is in Tamilnadu. Actually there are two temples in this Dhivyadhesam. In between this Thiruvaali Thirunagari, there is a place called "Kuraiyaloor" meaning no one has a problem or a suffering in this village

A king ruled this place whose name was "Aali Naadudaiyaar". He was a devotee of God Siva. He spent his time in worshipping Brahmins & God. He and his wife lived for the sake of bhagawan. They didn't have any progeny, so they prayed earnestly for a child.

At that time, "Srivaishnavism" was spread almost all over the world. But once again it had to be proved to people. Because of this "Kaliyuga" and due to tough methods of other religions the common people were confused. So, there was a need for a great bhakta at that particular time. Bhagawan Sriman Narayana decided to send his sword as a child to them. Yes! At that time, Hinduism was very much in need of a powerful man like sword who can cut the wrong illusions and ideas, which disturbed the devotion and happiness of the people.

Aali Naadudaiyaar and his wife were eligible of having a bhakta as their son for which, they did lots of chanting. Bhagawan Sriman Narayana accepted the prayer of the couple.

In the Kaliyuga, after 207 years, during Nala Year, on an auspicious day of ‘Karthigai' (a month of Tamil year) Krithiga Star, a Thursday and on a Full Moon Day, a baby was born on this earth to fulfill the wish of Lord.

All the great devotees in paramapadham really enjoyed this great auspicious day with chanting and meditation. So, many great devotees in this earth prayed sincerely for the long life of this baby. All the demigods' eyes were filled with tears of joy. The small village in which this baby was born has become the lovable place of bhagawan.

Aaali Naadudaiyaar and his wife enjoyed the gift of bhagawan. They paid their homage to bhagawan for this great gift. Shree Aali Naadudaiyaar gave gifts to elder Brahmins and did special poojas on that great occasion. All people had great urge to see the newborn baby. All the people who saw the baby admired the colour of that baby.

The colour of the baby was blue. So they named the child as "Neelan" (blue Coloured child). Radhekrishna! To be continued!!!!!!!!!!
